FRIENDS OF THE EARTH, HONG KONG
WIND RESOURCE STUDY
LOCATION
Lamma Island, Hong Kong. Lamma Island is located off the southern coast of Hong Kong Island.
THE SYSTEM
The system is required to provide 12 hours of sustainable 24V DC power to a set of aviation obstruction lights on an NRG 30-meter wind monitoring mast. It was powered by four 120 Wp solar panels and a 12-day battery bank.
Hong Kong Electric paid for the system as part of their effort to determine if a wind farm would be feasible on the outlying islands of Hong Kong.
INSTALLATION
The project design was carried out by SPC and the installation was handled by Friends of the Earth. Ease of installation was important as the equipment was to be helicoptered and assembled on site.
RELIABILITY
High quality system components had been selected to ensure 99.9% reliability as requested by FOE and Hong Kong Electric.
MAINTENANCE
The system was designed for minimal maintenance. The only maintenance required is to ensure that the vegativity growth does not shade the panels.
