Remote Area Power Systems Murputja Resource Centre, SA
LOCATION
Murputja is located approximately 115km south west of Ayers Rock in the far north west of South Australia.
Inland wind data and results from other Appropriate Energy installations in the area confirm the viability of wind generated power in low wind speeds of 3 - 5m/sec.
The unique design characteristics of the Appropriate Energy wind turbine allows substantial power to be generated at these levels at a cost per kWh substantially less than the equivalent output of solar PV arrays.
THE SYSTEM
The Appropriate Energy S20000 wind turbine is the primary source of electrical power for the newly established Aboriginal Education Resource Centre, comprising of a school and residential accommodation.
EQUIPMENT SPECIFICATIONS
- Appropriate Energy S20000 wind turbine with a 26m tilt tower featuring a three phase alternator capable of delivering 20kWh/day of power at a wind speed of 4.5m/sec (50.5kWh/day at 9.0m/sec).
- The output, rectified to 120V DC, is supplied to 20 Sonnenschein dryfit solar batteries (6V 200 Ah) via a 10kVA interactive twin phase inverter.
- As 'back up' and supply during low wind periods, a Perkins series 4 diesel genset rated at 12kVA at 240V, is automatically controlled and synchronised by the Siemens inverter.
The output from the system is reticulated via 19kV SWER lines to the houses, school and water bore pump.
