A Tasmania Telecommunications Power System
In 1990, project engineer, Rob Dagliesh, started work on designing a power system that did not need mains electricity and in early 1991, a solar powered customer multiplexer with radio links to 'civilisation' was installed. Although this worked quite well, the fickle Tasmanian weather dictated power output, and as more customers were connected the system needed to be upgraded.
In the middle of 1992, a wind generator was successfully added to the system. It harnesses the wind that is often present when the sun is not and also compensates for the loss of battery capacity in the low temperatures.
